Getting to Know: Maxwell Equestrian
What a crazy world we live in right now!
As I am currently, like the rest of the world, in lockdown due to COVID-19, I’ve been working on a few projects with my wonderful sponsors. We’re kicking things off with a ‘getting to know you’ series where I’ve sat down with the amazing Maxwell Equestrian to get the answers to some questions submitted via the AW Equestrian Facebook and Instagram pages.
Grab a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a mum, wife and rider from the Adelaide Hills, SA. I have ridden since I was 5 years old and have achieved a few of my riding goals over the years with many more left to reach!
What made you start your own company?
I wanted to buy some leather jumping boots for my horse and couldn’t find any for less than $200. I decided that it wasn’t right, and products needed to be more affordable. I started Maxwell Equestrian as an Aussie company to produce quality, hard-wearing boots for all disciplines that were affordable for every rider, no matter their level or riding goals.
How long have you been managing Maxwell Equestrian?
I started the business in 2015, so 5 years this year!
What difficulties did you face starting out?
It was difficult in the beginning because I really had to learn to market effectively and get the name out there as not only a quality product, but an affordable one. It’s not easy competing as a small business against the major brands that everybody knows.
What made you want to sponsor Amelia? How did that come about?
I had first heard of Amelia a few years ago when I saw that she owns a horse that I had many years ago as a youngster – Kirby Park Irish Janie. I started following her journey back when she was still eventing Janie and we began to chat about the many quirks that is Janie! I learnt about her story over the years and decided that she would be the perfect ambassador and role model for my business and to other riders.
I’ve loved following her journey toward Tokyo 2020 with her horse Genius, and it’s really cool to see Maxwell Equestrian now in Europe.
What’s your most popular product?
Navy croc print bushing boots!
Genius wearing the Navy Croc Patent brushing boots and bell boots.
What are your personal favourites?
Hard to say – I love the navy croc print, but I’m also partial to the red!
How do you come up with new boot designs?
A combination of colours that I like, plus input from my customers and brand ambassadors. I really try to fill any gaps in the market that I see.
What is your hope for Maxwell Equestrian in the coming years?
I would love to see the business develop into something that is recognized as being both affordable quality and having a trustworthy reputation. Of course, I am striving every day to make sure we are well-known and loved!
What would you most like people to know about Maxwell Equestrian?
That we are a small, family-run company in Australia that has a priority on bringing high-quality boots to riders of all levels and abilities at affordable prices.
Both Genius and I cannot thank Kira for her support during this difficult time, and we are working hard to do them proud at Tokyo 2021.
